Even after you narrow down the style and fabric, you still have to consider height. Luckily, low-profile sofas are making a comeback in a big way—and they're ideal for transforming a small room into a cavernous escape. Dress up your living room with one of these low-slung models. You may find swapping out your tall, oversized sofa for these shorter, sleeker versions makes your space feel airy and bright.

A small amount of spray adhesive applied to the foam can help the batting stick to it so it stays in place once you put the covers back on. If possible, have someone help you put the covers back on the cushions. All those layers of batting make it a tight fit- but that is what you're looking for, so ask someone to lend a hand to make your job less painful.

Now don’t just shove a bunch of cotton batting in there because it will result in a lumpy cushion. Instead, take off the cover (most sofas these days have removable covers) and wrap the cushion in a layer or two of quilt batting or foam wrap. If you find it shifts around a bit secure it using a spray adhesive. And if you find there are still a few saggy spots, now is the time to fill them with extra pieces of cotton batting. Easy peasy.

There were many "oohs" and "aahs" from my parents, along with accounts of how much more comfy it felt and how happy they were that they wouldn´t have to think about getting rid of it anytime soon. There was much rejoicing. The two things you need to determine before rushing out to purchase your poly-fil are: a) whether or not the foam in your seat cushions is able to be removed; and b) if there is an access point to the inside of your seat back cushions.

As you are no doubt aware, sleepers come with many different types of mattresses, some using specialty materials, some come with inner-springs and others are air beds. Try and find one with a mattress type you are happy using. Also look for a mechanism that opens and closes easily.

Make sure that you are getting high-density foam because lesser-quality foam can start breaking down pretty quickly, causing sags, and the fabric does not stay taut when that happens. If you want a really soft seat, consider down cushions. These are considered to be the premium choice, and as you might imagine they are also among the most expensive. High-quality cushions have down-proof ticking under the upholstery fabric to prevent feathers from poking through. Cushions filled just with down are high-maintenance and can need daily attention.

Is it for TV watching, curling up with a good book or formal entertaining? There's no point in getting a stiff and formal sofa if you plan to put your feet up and watch TV, nor do you want your guests to sink into the cushions and not be able to get up when you're entertaining. DO buy the best quality you can afford. A sofa is a big investment and you want it to last. Remember, a sofa of average quality should last at least 10 years while a high-end sofa should last up to 25.

Simply determine the lines of the sofa you want to accent and then nail in the tacks (try to place them at even intervals of roughly ½ inch). Just be sure to choose a solid part of the frame so you’ve got a solid foundation to nail the trim into. And it should go without saying that you cannot do this on a slipcovered piece – only on one that’s upholstered.

Just as you would pay attention to fabric weight, textures, and fit when you dress a human body, you should consider what would best fit your piece of furniture. I should also point out that slipcovers may not always be the perfect solution for a certain chair or sofa styles.
