The biggest challenge of a light sofa is staining and wear. Before selecting a white or light sofa consider how the room is being used now, not how you hope it will be used. Sunlight can bleach certain fabrics, and in other cases cause them to fade and deteriorate over time, so it’s important not to leave your sofa in a sunny spot. If the back of the piece is exposed to sunlight all the time, it will eventually fade to a lighter color than the front, and vice verse. Or if half is in the sun, it will fade to a lighter color than the other half. Or if you keep a throw pillow in the same spot, you’ll notice a significant difference in color when you remove it. As a general rule the sofa should be facing the focal point, but if there's no natural focal point what do you do? Here are some sofa placement tips to help you figure it out.

As a general rule, it is best to avoid very heavy fabrics such as chenille and velvets as they may not adapt very well to the shape a sofa or chair.
