Sunlight can bleach certain fabrics, and in other cases cause them to fade and deteriorate over time, so it’s important not to leave your sofa in a sunny spot. If the back of the piece is exposed to sunlight all the time, it will eventually fade to a lighter color than the front, and vice verse. Or if half is in the sun, it will fade to a lighter color than the other half. Or if you keep a throw pillow in the same spot, you’ll notice a significant difference in color when you remove it. There is no simple, easy yes or no answer to this question because the answer depends on several factors. If you are planning to reupholster an old sofa then you should really consider them before you commit to an expensive undertaking.

Select a color or pattern that does not let the fabric underneath show through unless that is the effect you are after. Textures add so much to the look and feel of any furniture. Consider the use of texture before you decide on your slipcovers. Textured fabric such as twill, damask or denim can add visual interest, while also resisting wrinkling.
