Hardwood is wood that we get from trees such as oak, maple, cherry walnut and other broad-leafed deciduous trees. This type of wood is stronger and better suited to most types of furniture making. Soft woods come from evergreen trees such as pines and cedar. This type of wood can bend or dent easily and therefore is not suitable where you need strength, such as in sofa frames. Most sofas sold these days are not made of a single frame construction. In many cases the sofa seats, backs and arms are manufactured as one piece and then the legs are screwed in after. So if you want to make a change it’s really easy. Can’t find new legs you like? Simply spray paint the old ones to a new color and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference.

What kind of witchy sorcery did I use to create this magical transformation, you ask? A super top-secret, rare fiber found only in every craft store ever. I used Poly-fil, an easy-to-find, cheap (a 10lb box will run you about $30) blend of polyester that has a high tolerance for wear and tear.

A small amount of spray adhesive applied to the foam can help the batting stick to it so it stays in place once you put the covers back on. If possible, have someone help you put the covers back on the cushions. All those layers of batting make it a tight fit- but that is what you're looking for, so ask someone to lend a hand to make your job less painful.

Slipcovers aren’t as expensive as they used to be (although they’re still not cheap) and they’re available in a huge variety of fabrics and colors. You can have them custom made if you want the perfect fit, or you can buy something in a standard size for a looser fit. And if you have an IKEA sofa you’re in luck – there are a few companies who make slipcovers specifically for IKEA furniture.
