Contemporary. f you’ve got a plain Jane sofa and you want it to look more formal a surefire way to do it is to add some nailhead trim. Simply determine the lines of the sofa you want to accent and then nail in the tacks (try to place them at even intervals of roughly ½ inch). Just be sure to choose a solid part of the frame so you’ve got a solid foundation to nail the trim into. And it should go without saying that you cannot do this on a slipcovered piece – only on one that’s upholstered.

The corners are further strengthened by the addition of reinforcing blocks for extra support and strength. Generally speaking, plywood and particleboard frames are inferior, especially if they are held together with staples. Additional layers of plywood can help reinforce the frame, so as you can see, construction matters as much as material. If you must choose a sofa with a plywood frame, make sure it has at least 11 to 13 layers of plywood.

Buttery soft saddle leather creates a cushioned, hyper-comfortable couch that demands your guests’ attention. Pair with rich bronze accessories, and don't forget to add texture using rugs, blankets, and greenery—otherwise, you risk the bold leather overwhelming the space.

Your slipcovers do not have to reach the floor, even the loose ones can be made to a length that stops short of covering the legs. When you have a wooden frame on your sofa, it is best to leave the bottom exposed. However, if you prefer you can change the look by putting a skirt on it.

If you are just tired of the fabric you have right now but don’t want to invest in a new piece of furniture, you may also want to look into slipcovers. I would definitely not recommend reupholstering in that event. In the end, it is simply a question of finding the best value.

These are then attached to the frame to make a platform for the cushions. Webbing can be made of either natural or man-made fibers, and if it is used alone doesn’t make for very strong support. In better-quality sofas, it is used with a tensioner that fastens the webbing securely to the frame. The web suspension is the least preferable of the seating support options.

If you're unable to reach up into the corners, a tool or something like a ruler wrapped with a soft towel will help to send the fill up to round out any sunken edges. I used a cordless telephone. True story. Add filling until you can't add anymore, and then add more. Continue to add fill as you back your hand out of the cushion, making sure there is a decent amount down by the zipper -you don´t want what you stuffed up in the top of your cushion to all settle to the bottom.

A traditional, wood-framed couch may be a terrible choice for a home with kids — sharp corners have caused many emergency rooms worth of boo-boos. If there are little feet playing chase around your living room, consider soft, upholstered edges. Once you've settled on a size and style, start scouring the web. Leave no website unturned. There are a number of places to buy couches online (you can even hit up stores like Amazon or Target, which have a surprising selection, if you´re on a tight budget).

The way to do this is to measure from the outside edge of the seat all the way to the back. It is best to do it from one of the sides. The next step is to measure the diagonal depth of the sofa. You do this by placing a straight tape measure from the top back of the frame to the bottom front.
