To achieve a Scandi-inspired, minimalist look, pair a set of slouchy square pillows in one corner of the sofa (preferably one solid and one patterned), and prop a smaller, rectangular-shaped pillow in the center of the other cushion. Instead of predictably tucking a single pillow into the corner of your sofa, why not take inspiration from Cottage Cloth and place a set facing inward? We love her choice of contrasting striped fabric, too.

If you'd like to recreate this look exactly, the paint used was Montana Colors' Greyhound Brown, but you could also use spray paint specially formulated for painting vinyl (pleather) and fabric. I know from experience that it works great. And if any of you do start spray painting your furniture, be sure to tell us all about it! Meri leaves us with these wise words of advice that apply to projects large and small: "Wear a mask when you spray paint."

Coffee tables are available in all sorts of sizes, heights, and metal, glass, painted, or natural wood finishes. A traditional coffee table can have a glass top, can be solid wood, or can be made out of metal or finished with a high gloss to shine as the center of attention in the room.

A coffee table should be chosen in a proper proportion for the size of the room and the sofa in front of which it stands. A large square room would look strange with a small, delicate oval glass-topped coffee table, just as a small room would be cramped with a large, heavy, dark-painted square coffee table.

A matte beige sofa fabric can appear dull around other colors, but a textured beige fabric with flecks of monochromatic color can create interest without adding new colors. Gray sofas can range from pale to charcoal colors. Considered a style chameleon, gray can be sophisticated, comfortable, cool or crisp. Neutral sofas can quietly complement your other decor, but still be stylish and attractive.

If your chair or sofa has a wooden frame around it or wooden arms, a slip cover may not be a good idea as they will be felt through the fabric. A piece that is covered in fabric leads you to believe that it will have a soft feel, and the hardness of wood underneath will not feel pleasant. Details such as welting can be an attractive feature in a slipcover. You can buy slipcovers with welting, or order ones that have it when you get them custom made or make them yourself. Decide whether you want self-welting or contrast welting on your slipcovers. Contrast welting will draw attention to the lines of your chair or sofa. If you want to emphasize them choose contrast welting, to play down the shape choose self-welting. Braids, fringes or buttons can also be added depending on the look you want.

No one needs the frustration and shopper’s regret that comes from a hasty and ill thought out purchase. A good salesperson will understand and help you find the one that is best suited to your needs.

This happens when you don‘t measure your space or the sofa or sometimes neglect both. Don’t go by how big the sofa looks in the store. A sofa might look deceptively small in a showroom but could end up being too big for your room, so not measuring your space or your sofa can create many problems. Other than measuring the size of your space, pay attention to the scale. Your sofa should be the same scale as your other furniture so it doesn’t seem too big or too small placed alongside the rest of it.

DO have it covered in an appropriate fabric. If you have kids and pets you’ll want something that is either easy to clean or can hide spills and dirt. DO become familiar with sofa styles before choosing. Do you want high arms (tuxedo sofa), medium arms (lawson) low arms (bridgewater) or no arms (slipper)? D o you want curvy and round or straight and streamlined? Do you want one long cushion on the seat or several? Think about all these things before you buy.
