Try some new art on the wall over the sofa, some new wallpaper on the wall behind it, or even new side tables and lamps on either side of it. When it's surrounded by different and beautiful things, your sofa might just look a little different and beautiful too!

Now that you have considered the frame and seating support, it is time to look at what kind of filling is used for the cushions. The most common filling is high-density polyurethane. The higher the density, the firmer the cushion will be. Foam can be wrapped in softer material or cotton to make it softer. Dacron-wrapped foam is the cheapest option, but it won’t last as long.

With $20 worth of spray paint, and an enviable abundance of confidence, the tenant gave this old piece a fresh new face. While most of us haven´t made over a whole couch, I´m sure many of us have found random furniture in our homes—and it probably needs at least a little work.

Re-covering involves just replacing the fabric, and it is more of a cosmetic procedure. Reupholstering could involve replacing the padding and springs, mending the frame or re-staining any wood. As you can see a complete re-upholstery job involves a lot of labor and replacement of material, and is more structural in nature.

When you have a sofa that dates back over a century, and you have invested good money in it, reupholstering it makes sense. This is not something that can be replaced by a brand new sofa. In this case, by reupholstering, you are actually restoring an antique. However, if this is an investment, this should not be attempted on your own. Get a qualified professional to do it, and it is going to be costly.

The craftsman connects each spring to the adjoining one with a strong twine. The twine passes front to back, side to side and then diagonally in both directions, thus tying each spring securely. Another method is sinuous spring construction. Sinuous springs are “S”-shaped and run from the front of the seat to the back. These springs are supported by additional wires that cross from side to side. This also makes for a strong seat, and it might be the preferred option in a sleeker style or smaller frame because it requires less space.

Additionally, the cushions should regain their shape after you press down and let go. A cushion that stays put when you press down will be flattened in no time, end up looking unsightly and feel uncomfortable when you sit on it. Cushions that do not fit snugly in place will also lose their shape quickly and the edges will start looking unsightly.

Contemporary By Hannah Fuchs. f you’ve got a plain Jane sofa and you want it to look more formal a surefire way to do it is to add some nailhead trim. Simply determine the lines of the sofa you want to accent and then nail in the tacks (try to place them at even intervals of roughly ½ inch). Just be sure to choose a solid part of the frame so you’ve got a solid foundation to nail the trim into. And it should go without saying that you cannot do this on a slipcovered piece – only on one that’s upholstered.
