When you are buying furniture for a new design or remodel, where do you start? I usually recommend starting with the largest and most expensive item, which, in the case of a living room or family room, is usually the sofa. The sofa is usually a focal point, the seating area most often used, and, if the wrong choice is made, the source of the most complaint. It's important to chose the right sofa style and size for your design.
Buying a couch online can feel like a leap of faith. To soothe your worries, start with this simple step: measure. There are a number of things to consider before purchasing your new couch, but the most important consideration is how the furniture will fit in your space. You´ll need to know a few different measurements: first, get the raw numbers for the length and width of the room in which your couch will reside. Yes, you might be able to squish an 84-inch couch into your space — but will your guests be squished, too? Ideally, there should be 36 inches between the wall and your furniture and 18 inches between your couch and the coffee table. This can also help you decide between a standard rectangular couch and a sectional. After all, nothing makes a cramped space feel tighter than an awkward sofa leg jutting across the floor.
Think backless sofa. It is usually placed against a wall with pillows added for comfort. A version of this sofa with one side angled to recline is called a "fainting couch" - ideal for those with a more delicate temperament. This is a form of love seat. It usually has a wood frame, open arms, and an upholstered seat. It is considered more formal (and usually more uncomfortable) than a love seat and sits a bit higher.
