People are creatures of habit, and when it comes to relaxing we often, without thinking, head to our favorite spot on the sofa. But sitting in the same spot over and over again can do the sofa quite a bit of harm—crushing the fibers and wearing down the springs underneath. So mix it up and sit on different parts of the sofa. One day sit on the left side, one day sit on the right, and another day try the middle. Distributing the weight evenly over time will help anyone spot from deteriorating too quickly.
Not all fabric is suitable for slipcovers. As a general rule, it is best to avoid very heavy fabrics such as chenille and velvets as they may not adapt very well to the shape a sofa or chair. But rules are meant to be broken and these materials can be good for a very custom-made, structured look. But as a general rule, slipcover fabric should usually be of medium-weight to more easily fit over your furniture.
Any parent knows that trying to keep kids from sitting on the wide arms of a couch is a losing battle. The arms hold up fine, even with the wear, tear, and weight of rambunctious family members, friends, and pets. A year later, they still look brand new. The seat cushions are made of memory foam which will mold itself to the shape of your body for extra comfort and support. After a year of use, the Kivik sofas have proved to be as comfortable as they seemed in the IKEA showroom. The fabric is easy to remove and machine washable. The fabric that we chose was a nubby weave, which has probably helped the sofa´ s staying power because the fabric still looks new.
