Not all fabric is suitable for slipcovers. As a general rule, it is best to avoid very heavy fabrics such as chenille and velvets as they may not adapt very well to the shape a sofa or chair. But rules are meant to be broken and these materials can be good for a very custom-made, structured look. But as a general rule, slipcover fabric should usually be of medium-weight to more easily fit over your furniture.
If you´re like most people, your sofa probably gets a lot of action, and as a result, it can get pretty dirty. Even if it doesn‘t look dirty, it‘s probably covered in dust particles, sloughed-off skin cells, bits of food, and who knows what else. No matter how clean you are your sofa will get dirty, so clean it regularly to extend its life.
The scale of the traditional sofa (in form, not in style) is usually from 6 to 8 feet, although longer, or shorter, sofas can be custom made. The average sofa fits three people comfortably and is the piece most often chosen for the living room. In terms of style, sofas can be found in a wide range. Look for differences in the arms, legs, back, and sofa cushions (loose or attached). Varying upholstery details will also set traditional sofas apart on the showroom floor.
