Hardwood is wood that we get from trees such as oak, maple, cherry walnut and other broad-leafed deciduous trees. This type of wood is stronger and better suited to most types of furniture making. Soft woods come from evergreen trees such as pines and cedar. This type of wood can bend or dent easily and therefore is not suitable where you need strength, such as in sofa frames. So while it is good to look for kiln dried wood, remember to as if the frame is constructed from hardwood rather than soft wood.
Facing the mantel - In most rooms where there's a mantel, the mantel is the focal point. Since you always want to place furniture so that it faces the focal point. across from a mantel is the perfect place to put a sofa. Across from another sofa - Since visual balance is so important, there´s no better place to put a sofa than facing another (preferably matching) sofa. In small rooms, this isn´t usually possible, but in larger rooms where space can accommodate, it‘s a layout worth considering.
But there are options for a piece of furniture in front of a sofa that can provide storage, a flat surface for decorative pieces, or just a nice break in the look of upholstered furniture. Here are some of our suggestions for a piece of furniture to place in front of the sofa. Will one work for your home?
